Where is it?

The muscle at the back of the upper arm. It has three heads; the long head starts from the shoulder blade (scapula), so it crosses the shoulder joint as well.

Muscles included: triceps brachii (long, lateral and medial heads)

Main actions

  • Straighten (extend) the elbow
  • Hold the elbow straight while the hands support the body
  • The long head helps take the arm backwards

Stretches that lengthen the triceps (2)

When it works in Pilates

They work in exercises where the hands support the body, such as Reverse Plank, and in strap work that presses backwards. Check that the elbow is held by the muscles rather than by locking the joint.
