Position and focus

Seated (chair) · Gastrocnemius and back of the ankle

A self-stretch for the gastrocnemius and back of the ankle. Support your body and stay within a comfortable range.

Starting position

Sit towards the front of a chair, extend one leg forwards and rest the heel on the floor. Loop a towel around the front of the foot and hold one end in each hand.

Movement phases

1. Loop the towel

Keep the heel of the straight leg on the floor and hold the towel loosely.

2. Draw the toes in

Pull the towel lightly and bring the toes towards the shin.

3. Hold the stretch

Breathe where you feel a gentle stretch in the calf.

4. Release the ankle

Loosen the towel and return the ankle to a comfortable position.

What to check yourself

Check that the straight knee is not bending and that you are not rounding your back by pulling hard on the towel.

Caution

Stop if you feel sharp pain, numbness, dizziness, shortness of breath or anxiety. If you are receiving treatment, recovering from surgery or pregnant, check with your healthcare professional first.
